About

Hi! I’m Graeme, although on sites that expect handles rather than real names, I’m usually Wntrmute, which perhaps explains this domain’s name too.

I am a Mathematician, currently a postdoc at the University of Bristol. My research has focused on the topic of integer matrices with constrained eigenvalues, but I’m generally interested in computational / experimental / algebraic number theory. Most of my mathematical writing (for audiences of varying levels) finds its way to the Modulo Errors blog here on Straylight.

I have accumulated a number of distractions for when I’m not attempting to prove theorems, which also tend to have an online aspect:

  • Photography: I take a lot of typical tourist shots (see below) but recently have become interested in the camera’s ability to capture scenes that the eye cannot, be they tiny fractions of sporting action or multi-second cityscapes. Relatedly, I’m also experimenting with slow-motion video. I keep travel pictures on Sosauce, and for everything else I use Flickr.
  • Travel: The flexible hours of postgrad life and the conference circuit led to my being bitten by the travel bug, and my wanderings covered Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands, as well as more local exploration around Scotland. Although I have less opportunities now, I continue to contribute to Sosauce as ‘The Mathematical Tourist’.
  • Robotics: When I feel like doing something slightly less abstract with computers, I tinker with a robot I built based on the ‘Terk’ project from CMU. This supports both user control (and telepresence) over a network, or autonomous operation via a host pc; my (slow!) progress is described in the Robo-blog.
  • Noding: I have been a member of Everything2 for many years, and although my rate of writeup production has slowed to a crawl, I’m still fairly involved in the community aspects of the site.
